CaptionWhen the time of death arrived for Ajamila, who had lived a sinful life, he thought only of his youngest son, whom he was very attached to. His son's name was Narayana (a name of God). The Yamadutas, the order carriers of Yamaraja approached Ajamila, to bring his soul to Yamaraja for judgement. They had fierce, twisted faces, their hair stood straight up and they carried ropes for capturing souls. Ajamila was bewildered and fearful and he called loudly for his son with tears in his eyes. As soon as he chanted the holy name, Narayana, the Vishnudutas, the order carriers of Lord Vishnu, heard him and arrived there. They did not consider why he had chanted. They ordered the Yamadutas, who were about to rip the soul of Ajamila from the core of his heart, not to touch him. Shocked, the Yamadutas asked them, "Who are you, sirs, that have the audacity to challenge the jurisdiction of Yamaraja?" All of them argued over who would claim the soul of Ajamila.
