CaptionWhen Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was leaving Jagannath Puri, He told Gadadhara Pandit not to give up his vow of kshetra-sannyasa. This vow is when one goes to a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and stays there, performing some specific service. Gadadhara Pandit said to the Lord, " Wherever You are staying is Jagannath Puri. Let my so-called kshetra-sannyasa go to hell." But the Lord told him to stay in Jagannath Puri and engage in Lord Gopinatha's service. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said, "If you abandon His service, it will be My fault. It is better that you remain here and render service. That will be My satisfaction." Gadadhara replied, "Do not worry. All the fault will be on my head. I shall not accompany You but shall go alone." So Gadadhara Pandit traveled alone, but when they reached the place called Kataka, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu called him and he went into the Lord's company.
Gadadhara Pandit gave up his life's vow just to get Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's association. This was due to a very deep loving affection which cannot ordinarily be understood. Actually, Gadadhara Pandit's behavior was very pleasing to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's heart. Still, the Lord displayed the anger of love and said to him, "You have abandoned Gopinatha's service and broken your vow to live in Puri. All that is now complete because you have come so far. Your wanting to go with Me is simply a desire for sense gratification. In this way, you are breaking two religious principles, and because of this I am very unhappy. If you want My happiness, please return to Nilachala. You will simply condemn Me if you say any more about this matter. At this, the Lord got into a boat, and Gadadhara Pandit fell to the ground in an unconscious state.
